What changed for 2026-27
Payson Unified now runs bus routes only for students in the outlying areas around Payson. The in-town routes are gone, and the district went back to the routes it ran in spring 2023 (azfamily, May 2026 (opens in a new tab)). The reasons were the budget and a shortage of drivers. Families who've been here a few years have seen this before: the district cut in-town routes once, added them back, and has now cut them again.
The Roundup put the numbers plainly: a projected $1.3 million deficit, more than $100,000 saved by cutting in-town routes, and about 130 in-town students who had been riding them every day (Payson Roundup, February 23, 2026 (opens in a new tab)).
Payson Unified transportation: who still rides
| Grade band or area | Distance rule | How it's measured | Exceptions |
|---|---|---|---|
| All grades, outlying areas | By area, not distance. The February plan kept Rye, Oxbow Estates, Pine-Strawberry, Mesa del Caballo, Christopher Creek and East Verde Park. | Check your address against the final 2026-27 routes on the district's page. | |
| All grades, in town | No bus | ||
| Payson Community Kids (after school) | Still has transportation | ||
| Students with disabilities | Handled separately | Accessible transportation where needed. |

If there's no bus
Ask first. If you're near the edge of an outlying area, check the final route list rather than the February plan, and call 928-474-2340 if your address is close.
Then transit. The district said it was exploring public transit passes for older students. We haven't found an announced program, so ask the district before you count on one.
Then a carpool. Most in-town drives are short. The hard part isn't miles; it's who can leave work at dismissal.
Finding families
Start in the drop-off line. The Roundup noted that most in-town parents already drove, and the board's worry was the line itself: more cars at the same school sites, and parents arriving an hour before dismissal. The families sitting in that line with you are going to the same school at the same time. Ask the car in front.
Carpool ideas for Payson
- Shorten the line. Three families in one car is two fewer cars at dismissal. Carpool-Q's weekday morning summary says whose car is in it today.
- Split mornings from afternoons. Each family only has one fixed time to protect.
- Snow days at nearly 5,000 feet. Agree before the first storm whose car handles a snowy morning, and what happens when that driver can't go.
- Use the same rotation for practice. If two kids play the same sport, the after-school pickup can follow the morning rotation.
Write the rotation on a free printable carpool schedule (no account needed).
A short drive, three families, and nobody wants to sit in the line every day.
- One shared week on every family's phone, with a driver for each drop-off and pickup.
- Mark a rider "not riding" for a day, or swap a day, and every family sees it.
- If tomorrow has no driver, the whole carpool gets an alert the evening before.
Each family starts with 14 days free. You invite the others by email or a text from the app.
Each family has its own account: 14 days free, then $1.99 a month per family. You invite the other families by email or a text from the app.
