What changed for 2026-27

Kyrene families found their bus stops in new places this year. The district expanded shared neighborhood stops for elementary and middle school students, so kids walk to one stop instead of the bus making several. Kyrene said it helps the buses keep time while it's about 23 drivers short (Chandler News, January 24, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). The district told FOX 10 (opens in a new tab) (July 22, 2026) that stops sit within a one-mile radius of eligible riders' homes, and that the walking boundaries themselves didn't change. Start times and bus tiers stayed the same.

Schools changed too. Manitas, Estrella and Colina elementary schools closed after 2025-26. Akimel A-al, Pueblo Middle School and Kyrene Traditional Academy are set to close the summer after this one (Chandler News).

If there's no bus

Ask first. Kyrene says it weighs physical and roadway barriers, like a major road or no safe crossing, case by case. If your child's walk crosses one, call dispatch (480-541-1717) and ask for a review. It may still be no, but it costs one phone call.

Then transit. For most Kyrene families, it isn't a real option. Every rider here is in elementary or middle school, and a city bus across Tempe or Ahwatukee is a lot to ask of a 9-year-old.

Then a carpool, or a walking group.

Finding families

Start at your shared stop. The whole point of the new stops is that one corner now collects kids from several blocks. The parents waiting there at 7 a.m. are your list. If your child's school is one of the closed ones, the old school's parent group is a second list: those families were reassigned with you.

Carpool ideas for Kyrene families

Kyrene is elementary and middle school only, so there are no teen drivers to lean on. Every carpool here is parents.

Monday, Erin Moss drives the 7:10 AM drop-off and Jen Cole the 2:20 PM pickup; Tuesday, Paul Diaz drives the 7:10 AM drop-off and Sam Ward the 2:20 PM pickup; Wednesday, Jen Cole drives the 7:10 AM drop-off and Nina Ruiz the 2:20 PM pickup; Thursday, Sam Ward drives the 7:10 AM drop-off and Erin Moss the 2:20 PM pickup; Friday, Nina Ruiz drives the 7:10 AM drop-off and Paul Diaz the 2:20 PM pickup.

A walk rotation is still a rotation. Somebody has to know whose morning it is.

  • One shared week on every family's phone, with a driver for each drop-off and pickup.
  • Mark a rider "not riding" for a day, or swap a day, and every family sees it.
  • If tomorrow has no driver, the whole carpool gets an alert the evening before.
